UI/UX Case Study
Callie Care Team

The Project

The Callie Communication System® is a hospital communication platform designed to help patients and their care team communicate better, more effectively and efficiently. While battling Leukemia, I conceived and mocked up the first prototype of what is now, the Callie Communication System®.

Callie is an enterprise, real-time health communication platform. It consists of multiple applications and interfaces for care team members, patients and hospital administration. Callie Care Team is a mobile application for nurses and other hospital staff "on the unit". It allows them to quickly communicate with the patient and among their peers.

Callie Promo Video

This 2 minute promo video was done while the product was still in development. I needed a way to share my vision for the product to investors and potential customers without having the actual product finished. The video was successful in helping my clients quickly understand how the product would work, and the proposition value. v

Callie Live Demo

The video below is a clip from a live presentation I did for hundreds of investors and potential customers. The team did not want to use the live prototype during the presentation, so I created a mock-up using After Effects and Keynote for the demonstration. In one minute you will get a sense for his User Interface design, User Experience design and  presentation skills to large audiences using mock-ups.

Recommendation: Watch this 1 minute video before continuing.

Evolution of Callie Care Team

Below are 4 different stages that the Callie Care Team application has gone through. You will see conceptual mock-ups and how they have evolved over time based on user feedback, product development, budget, and functionality. Each stage had its own unique purpose.

version I

This is the first conceptual mock-up of what was then called Bedside Nurse. These mock-ups were used to start conversations with nurses to gather feedback about the whether this was even a project worth developing.

version II

After receiving feedback that the concept of a mobile device for nurses was indeed an improvement and needed, I flushed out the design and coded a mock-up mobile app using Corona.  This allowed the team to physically hand an iPhone to a nurse for the purposes of  gathering  user feedback. While it appeared to function properly to the user, in actuality the back end servers had not been developed yet.

We were not as concerned with the overall design at this point. We were focused on functionality and what features we needed to implement to make a successful product.  The purpose of version II was to get it in the hands of end users for functional feedback.

version III

Version III was developed specifically for nurse focus group testing. We performed multiple focus groups over the course of 3 months with three different subject groups. Here we intently studied nurse work-flow to better understand what features and functions they needed every day. We were able to validate most of our assumptions and added new features based on their feedback.

We also started to develop the user interface to gather feedback. Users wanted it to be simple, quick and needed to have a balance of key information and simplicity.

version IV

In version IV we took the feedback from our focus groups and determined our Most Viable Product and its functionality. Working hand and hand with the development team, I designed the layouts, assets and storyboards that the development team then coded using Xcode.

While I can dream big about the interface, some designs needed to be scaled back in order to fit our development schedule and budget. Version IV is currently under development.

Workflow Example

Below is an example of a workflow chart for I designed for Callie. Callie was a productivity tool for hospital staff and it was important to develop workflows that were customizable by the hospital and flexible in an ever changing environment. As part of our development process, we came up with a number of user stories and developed workflows for each.  (Note, this is just one work flow example and depicts only one of many different scenarios for this particular story.)
